Ruth Bowen Mayer passed away peacefully on November 4th at her home in Silver Ridge Park .  

She was born May 13, 1925 in Passiac, Ruth Lived in Paramus until moving to Seaside Park , in 1972, then Silver Ridge Park in 1984.  Ruth was a homemaker, working for several years for the Paramus Board of Education and the Seaside Park Board of Education.

Ruth was predeceased by her brother, Robert, her parents, Halstead and Frances Bowen, and her loving husband, Robert Mayer.  Surviving to cherish her memory are her children William Robert Mayer and his wife Denise of Point Pleasant Beach, and Gary Robert Mayer of Florida , four grandchildren Reese, Evan, Brett and Adam Mayer, two sisters Jane Henry and Evelyn Murden, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday November 8th at 1:00 PM at the Van Hise and Callagan Funeral Home, 812 Arnold Ave. Pt. Pleasant Beach.  Cremation will be private.

John C. Zarski Age 86 of Barnegat died November 3, 2008 Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank

He was an Engineer working for Western Electric & At&T in NJ for many years. Born in Jersey City , NJ and lived in North Arlington before moving to Barnegat 36 years ago. John served in the Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium in the Ardennes Forest .  He received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus in North Arlington and a member of the V.F.W. post in North Arlington. He was a former parishioner of Our Lady of Queen of Peace Church , North Arlington.

Jacob Steckel, 88, passed away Monday.  He was predeceased by his wife Isabel “Dolly”.  

He is survived by two daughters, Carol Johnson and Barbara Petriello, a son-in-law, Michael Petriello, four grandchildren, Michael and Patrick Petriello, Daniel Lowder and Kathleen Grice, and two great grandchildren, Dylan and Caitlin Grice.  Jack was a World War II Army Veteran a member of the 7th Armored Division.

He graduated from Memorial High School in West New York and moved to Brick in 1958. After retiring he enjoyed many enjoyable hours with his friends in the Monmouth County Parks walking group, most especially Mitch and Phil.  Jack loved his sports teams and was an avid Yankee and Dallas Cowboys fan. The family wishes to express heartlfelt thanks to the staff at Shorrock Gardens Nursing Home for their compassion and kindness. 

Funeral services will be private however there will be a remembrance of his life at the home of his daughter Barbara Petriello on Saturday from 1-4 all friends are welcome to attend.

Madeline  M. Tooker Age 79 of Brick, NJ died October 24, 2008 at Claremont Care Center, Pt. Pleasant

She was a Registered Nurse at Point Pleasant Hospital , Pt. Pleasant for 23 years and retired 13 years ago. Prior to that she worked in St. Francis Hospital , Jersey City.  Born in North Bergen , NJ she lived in Pt. Pleasant before moving to Brick 5 years ago. She was a LINEAR descendant  of the Revolutionary Patriot families the Irons and the Applegates  She attended St. Dominic’s Academy, Jersey City , and Attended Rutgers University in Jersey City .  She graduated from Ocean County College of Nursing.She was a member of St. Dominic’s RC Church, Brick

Josephine D. Reynolds, 75 of Pt. Pleasant Beach died Sunday October 19th, at her residence.  

She was born in Glen Ridge, NJ , lived in Roseland, NJ before moving to Pt.Pleasant Beach in 1985.

Her companion of ten years Robert Caldwell of Pt. Pleasant Beach and a sister Camille Hoheb of Loudenville , NY .

Alexandra Thomas Powers, 86, a longtime resident of Bay Head, NJ died Saturday October 18th, at Meridian Hospice in Brick. 

She was born in Elizabeth , NJ where she attended the Vail- Deane School and was a member of the Elizabeth Junior League. Alexandra graduated from the Madeira School in Greenway, VA, and also studied at Pine Manor Junior College in Wellesley , MA .  She was proud of her service in the US Navy with the Waves during World War II.  Afterward she was an assistant editor with Doubleday & Company, in New York City . She also raised her family and lived for 25 years in New York City .  She was a member of the Bay Head Yacht Club, Manasquan River Golf Club and Turtle Creek Golf Club in Tequesta, FL where she was a winter resident.

She was married for 40 years to Gordon Powers , Sr. who predeceased her. She was a devoted mother to her five children: Terrill Taylor of Portsmouth, RI; Gordon Powers of East Kingston, NH; Thomas Powers of Scottsdale, AZ; Alexandra Polhemus of Northborough, MA and Patrice Powers of Apex, NC.  She is also survived by her twin sister Terrill Thomas of Sea Island , GA and her brothers Tim Thomas of Temple Terrace , FL and Edward Thomas of Princeton , NJ as well as her sons-in-law William J. Taylor and Bart Polhemus; daughter-in-law, Karen Powers; and five grandchildren.

Friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, 10:30 AM at All Saints Episcopal Church, Bay Head. Van Hise & Callagan Funeral Home, Point Pleasant Beach is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret loved to play the piano and paint with either oil or water colors

Renee Leman Strickland Kapp died Monday at Care One Nursing Home, Wall Twp.  

She was born in Bay Head, NJ and lived in Lakewood , OH before moving to Mantoloking , NJ in 1986.  She graduated from Point Pleasant High School (NJ) and received her BA from Douglass College of Rutgers University in 1944.  She met and married the love of her life on November 27, 1943.  She was an accomplished violinist and a member of the Cleveland Women’s Orchestra, Cleveland , OH between 1948 and 1960.  While living in Lakewood , OH , she was a member and past president of both the Women’s Auxiliary of the Medical Staff and the Woman’s Board of Lakewood Hospital.   She was a member of the DAR Old Barnegat Chapter in NJ and a founding member of the Bay Head Historical Society.  

She is predeceased by her husband Dr. Robert Wesley Kapp by 57 days. (July 27, 2008)  She is survived by two brothers, Arthur John Strickland and Gerald Charles Strickland, two sons Robert Wesley Kapp, Jr, Ph.D and Gregory Peter Kapp, a daughter, Claudia Renee Kapp Horn, 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Elizabeth Schumacher Hanrahan, fondly called Betsy throughout her lifetime, died Tuesday  at her residence.   

She was born in Hackensack , NJ on November 1, 1935 to Hiram and Miriam Schumacher. Elizabeth grew up in Bogota , NJ before moving to Ocean County in 1968. She was a devoted and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, and she was the youngest of three sisters. Elizabeth ’s life revolved around her eight children and seventeen grandchildren. She mostly enjoyed spending time with her many grandchildren.  She was the center of all family gatherings and holiday dinners. She was a nurturer, caretaker, confidante, problem-solver and peacekeeper.  She gave us fond memories of summer at the beach house with the family. Her kindness was ever present and her wisdom boundless.  She was an avid book reader and history buff.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years David W., her sons David and his wife Victoria, Edward and his wife Kayleen, Thomas, Christopher and his wife Laurie, William &  his wife Susan, Joseph and his wife Wendy.  Her daughters Anne McManus, Carolyn Kline, and her husband Brian. Sisters, Marilyn Johnson and Jean De Martino  and her husband Vince.

Arthur E. Flynn, 73 died Thursday, August 14, 2008, at his residence in Brielle.  

Mr. Flynn was born in Boston , Mass. , and lived in New York City . He summered in Bay Head for many years before moving there fulltime in 1980. Mr. Flynn was a private investor on Wall Street before retiring in 2000. He was a lieutenant in the Navy serving three years active duty on Nantucket, Key West Fla , and San Salvador . Mr. Flynn graduated Boston College in 1957, and established the Anna Maloney Flynn Scholarship fund in honor of his mother which benefits the children of Bay Head, Nantucket and Back Bay, Boston .

He is predeceased by his brother Nicholas Flynn earlier this spring.
He is survived by his two daughters Tracy Kennedy Flynn of San Francisco, CA. and Kerry Kennedy Flynn of Nantucket , Mass and Pops to Giang Flynn. He was a loving uncle to Brian, Sheila, Stephen Flynn and Martin McDonough and their families. Also survived by his sister-in-law Barbara Flynn. He had an extended family of Flynns whom he loved dearly.

Donald G. Morgenroth, 74 of Point Pleasant Beach died on Sunday August 3rd at Shorrock Gardens Care Center in Brick.  

He was born in Newark ,lived in Essex Fells were he lived for 25 years , in 1965 he moved to Livingston where he resided for 30 years before moving to Point Pleasant Beach 12 years ago. He graduated from Glover Cleveland High School in Caldwell in 1952 and from Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia in 1963. Don worked at Western Electric Company in Newark as an electrical engineer and retired 32 years later from AT&T in  1990 as a  management employee. He will be remembered by many loving family and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents George and Helen Morgenroth.  He is survived by his wife Irene F. Reilly Morgenroth, two sons Donald G. Morgenroth, Jr. and his wife Loraine of Cedar Knolls, NJ  and Andrew Morgenroth of Livingston .  A daughter Arlene Leffler and her husband Chris.of Livingston .His brother Robert and his wife Ruth Ann  of Strousberg , PA.   Four grandchildren Megan and Caitlyn Leffler and Hunter & Dylan Morgenroth .

Ruth  Elizabeth Boyle Kinghorn Andrews of Pt. Pleasant, NJ passed away August 1, 2008 at Sunnyside Manor Nursing Home, Manasquan.  

Mrs. Andrews dedicated her life to raising 5 children.  She was a driving force for her family to move from Rutherford , NJ in 1963 to Pt. Pleasant to build a better life for her children on “the shore”.  With her husband Ed they purchased a new business and chose a home on Beaver Dam Creek to raise their young family, which included two sets of twins ages 13 and 2.

Her five children were the beneficiaries of their mother’s constant dedication, vigilance, love and hard work.  They were inspired by her resourcefulness and balancing the roles of being a loving wife, business manager, and dedicated mother.  Mom provided a loving home and always put her children’s needs before her own. Her commitment to family, unconditional love, ability to provide and be supportive in quite confidence is attributes that her children pay tribute in her memory for always. Rest in Peace Mom…in Gods ever lasting love…you earned and deserve it.

She was predeceased by her parents Harriet Moore and James Turner Boyle and a daughter Kathy Lee. She is predeceased by her husband of 42 years Edward James Kinghorn whom she married on November 28,1946 .  She is also predeceased by her second husband George Andrews.

Robert Wesley Kapp, MD died Sunday at Ocean Medical Center , Brick.

Born in Tidioute , PA he practiced medicine in Lakewood , Ohio (1952-1982). He received his B.S. degre from  Syracuse University (1940) and his M.D. at McGill University Faculty of Medicine (1943). He also earned an MMS in Surgery NY Medical College (1946) a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery (1954) and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (1957). He was in Private Practice in General Surgery, Lakewood , Ohio (1952-1982) and at Lakewood Hospital , Lakewood , Ohio he was Chief resident in surgery (1948-1949), Chief of surgery (1961-1963), President of the Medical Staff (1963-1965), Assistant Professor of Surgery – Case Western Reserve, Cleveland , Ohio (1975-1984), Medical Volunteer in the surgical suite at Lakewood Hospital (1984-1986)

He retired to Mantoloking , NJ in 1986 where he also volunteered at Point Pleasant Hospital until 1995. He was recognized by the Lakewood Hospital Foundation at a special award banquet in his honor for his contributions to Lakewood Hospital , November, 1998. He served Military where he interned at US Naval Hospital, Sampson NY (9/1944). He was assigned to the USS Oneida, APA 221 as the Beach Battalion Medical Officer in the Pacific Theater 10/1944 to 11/1945. He also served at US Naval Hospital, Palm Beach , Fla.

He is survived by his wife Renée Leman Strickland whom he married November 27, 1943 .
Two sons: Robert Wesley Kapp, Jr., Ph.D. & Gregory Peter Kapp.
A daughter- Claudia Renée Kapp Horn
7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Thursday July 31st 11:00 AM at the Van Hise & Callagan Funeral Home, 812 Arnold Ave. Pt. Pleasant Beach.  Cremation will be private.

Anna Snyder (nee Kohler) Age 97 Pt.Pleasant  Beach , NJ died July 27, 2008 at Ocean Medical Center , Brick

She was a Homemaker. Born in Newark , NJ she lived in Irvington , then lived in Pt. Pleasant Beach . After she remarried William “Clem” Snyder  in 1968 she moved to Colts Neck and lived there for 17 years moving back to Pt.Pleasant Beach 15 years ago. She did quilting for St. Peter’s Church, Pt. Pleasant Beach.

Predeceased by her First  husband Clifford Snyder (1965).  She is also predeceased by her 2nd husband William “Clem” Snyder

Mark L. Oty, of Manasquan died Monday July 14th

Mark left this world doing what he loved best-golfing.  He was a kind compassionate person who touched the hearts and souls of everyone he met.

He was predeceased by his father Lou Oty.  He is survived by his wife Drena, his mother Mary Oty, his sister Tina and her husband Ronnie Burns.  Two nieces and one nephew and two grandnieces.

Richard Joseph Jahns was born in Temple , Texas on January 30, 1963 .  He was a graduate of Temple High School and a member of the First All-State 5A Football Team.  In 1985, he graduated with an Engineering  Technology degree from Texas   A & M University .  He worked for Rohr Industries in Riverside , California until 1989.  While at Rohr, he received a Special Recognition award in 1988.  He moved to Marion , Virginia and worked with Brunswick Defense until 1991.  From 1991 to 1993, he worked for Latecoere, a French aerospace company in Toulouse , France .  In 1993 he moved to Farmingdale , NJ where he worked for Frequency Engineering Labs.  While working for these companies, he earned high security clearance and was able to work on several United States defense projects.  In 1996, he changed his profession and became a  Financial Specialist with Edward Jones in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ  While with Edward Jones, he received the Winner Circle Award in 2001, the Century Award in 2006 , and the Jack Phelan Award in 2007.  Richard was also an active member of the Point Pleasant Beach Chamber of Commerce for over 10 years, serving as a past president in 2001, chairman of the Seafood Festival for 8 years and was director for the Car Cruises for 4 years.  He also received the chamber’s Volunteer of the Year Award in 2005.  He attended St. Peter’s Catholic Church and was an active member of the Lion’s Club, the EAA Chapter 315 North Jersey Shore and EAA Chapter 898.

Rich was an avid aviator and had proudly worked since 1999 to build his own airplane.  He was the happiest when he was flying, but he died in a tragic plane accident on July 5, 2008 .  While experiencing mechanical trouble, Rich was able to navigate his plane into the Shark River , while he lost his life, he saved the lives of many by going into the water and avoiding the highly populated Neptune City marina area.

He is survived by his parents, Richard and Mary Helen Jahns Schigut of Temple, Texas, brothers John Jahns and wife Kelli of Rosebud Texas, and Michael Jahns and Wife , Monica of Temple, Texas and sister, Jana Jahns of San Diego, California, 4 nieces, 3 nephews, and 1 great- niece.

A public gathering will be offered on Thursday from 6-9 PM at Van Hise & Callagan Funeral Home, 812 Arnold Ave , Pt. Pleasant Beach .  A funeral mass will be held Friday 9:00 AM at St. Peter’s Church, Pt. Pleasant Beach .

Edward A. Crawford Age 79 Point Pleasant Beach , NJ died July 2, 2008 at Ocean Medical Center , Brick 

He was a Maintenance Mechanic at Ocean County Vocational School in Toms River , NJ for 10 years until he retired 17 years ago. Born in Jersey City , NJ he lived in Manahawkin and Brick for many years until noving to Pt. Pleasant 5 years ago. He served in the US Navy during WW II. He was a member of the VFW, and of the USS Purdy Reunion Assoc. and a past member of the USS New Jersey Assoc. Edward was a parishioner of St. Peter’s RC  Church, Pt. Pleasant Beach

She was a Financial Sales Consultant for PNC Bank in Spring Lake for 4 years.  Born in Lakewood , NJ she lived in Brick : Jenniffer was a member of the Metedeconk River Yacht  Club and  a member of the Rebecca Martin Dance School for 18 years .  She graduated from Brick High School in 1997.  and subsequently graduated from both Ocean County College and William Paterson University.  She also received a teaching degree from Georgian Court College   She was a long time team leader of the Cystic Fibrosis Walk-a-Thon in Pt. Pleasant Beach .  She was married on April 18, 2004 to her wonderful Husband Damon.

He was a National Salesman for Parade Magazine in New York and Advertising Executive for Modern Maturity and AARP both in New York, for many years. He retired in 1986.  Born in Jersey City , NJ he lived in Short Hills before moving to Bay Head in 1985. He served in with the US Army in the invasion of  Normandy Beach during World War II. He was a member of Bay Head Yacht Club, Steering Committee, Bay Head, Recycling Committee, Bay Head and the Environmental Committee, Bay Head.
